Well that was a week, wasn’t it? There are other voices who reflect on these historic events much better than me so I won’t add mine to the chaos. But as always: no human is illegal and Fuck Trump and this administration. If you don’t agree with this basic human right then you don’t have to read another word I ever write. You are not welcome here.
The Israeli attack on Iran plus the assassination of Wisconsin Representative Hortman & her husband and the attempted assassination of Representative Hoffman and his wife is ATROCIOUS. I wonder if the history textbooks will write about this time and decide that we are already in WWIII. My heart is heavy and I have no idea what to do.

Thank god for art. Once again art has saved my sanity this week. Starting off with Steve and I catching a late night showing Wednesday of ‘The Phoenician Scheme’ (2025), the new film by Wes Anderson. Steve and I don’t usually have the same taste in movies but he is always down to watch anything Anderson makes. Per usual, the film was beautiful and strange and brilliant and absolutely hilarious. I was giggling the whole time, and at one point crying laughing. Tom Hanks and Bryan Cranston as brothers is reason enough to watch it. Mia Threapleton Stole every scene she was in and I will be following her career to see what she does next.

My June reading slump is continuing. My free time has been spent re-reading my own novel to line edit and when I’m not doing that I’ve been watching tv shows (see below) or watching the protests in LA and around the world on TikTok. I’m still enjoying ‘The Knight and the Moth’ by Rachel Gillig and yesterday I picked up a signed copy of ‘Bury My Bones In the Midnight Soil’ by V. E. Schwab from my local bookstore. It’s going to rain all week here in NJ so hopefully I can get out of this slump. (I also grabbed the other books from a great deal: 3 for $1! Gosh I love the Asbury Book Cooperative)

This was one of those weeks where I couldn’t get into a serious show due to how serious the outside world is. I went back to my tried and true comfort: anime. I watched the first two seasons of ‘Apothecary Diaries’ on Netflix. It’s a cute show where a girl with medicinal and poisonous experience starts working at a palace as a taste tester for one of the emperor’s favorite concubines. It was very silly and pretty - the exact thing I needed this week.

I could not attend the No Kings protests on Saturday due to prior family plans, but I shared and supported where I could. I am so proud of not only my town, Asbury Park, for coming out in the rain but all of the nearly 2,000 protests across the country. It made me believe in this country again. That people actually are seeing what Trump is doing and seeing how wrong it is. That stupid military parade was an embarrassment and a disgrace. We are a country of immigrants. I am the grandchild of immigrants. Pieces of paper don’t make me any better than another human being.
I’m exhausted. I’m sure you are too. Hang in there<3
Thank God for art! I second that for sure
